Three Little Birds

On my last page I wanted to go for a lyrical page that lets the audience sing it and remembering the tune from a long time ago. I thought to make the song a well known one that most people should have listened to and enjoyed it. I went for Bob Marleys classic song- Three Little Birds. The reason being was because it was a happy song and would make our audience feel happy and know that every little thing is going to be alright!

So how was I going to present this page? I was thinking of getting the colours that reperesent where he’s from as a background to add more colour to the Zine itself. I got coloured paper and begun to experiment with it.

I went onto tearing the paper up instead of giving it a clean look due to the fact that I was thinking of giving the typography a clean feel.

Here’s where I felt I went wrong as that I’m totally not good at hand drawing type as I haven’t had much experience with it.

I felt the need to write the lyrics out on plain white paper as that of I had put it on the coloured pages it could be hard to read on certain areas.

I layered the lyrics on to white paper which was then layered on top of different coloured sheets, therefore the finishing product looking like this!

Keeping Cartoon ALIVE!

The same as my latest page, I wanted to catch some content from an old childhood magazine and collage/lay them out in my own way to make it more personal. The comic book I went for was an old Simpsons comic which I used to love and it always caught my eye when I was a kid. The page was meant to be an advertising for their productions.

I had many strips to choose from the comics I had, but again I had to find ones that would fit into my page which did come across rather frustrating from time to time. Here are the pages that stood out to me because of the sizes and illustration within.

Though once I had cut out the images separately I then noticed that none would fit in the page! Therefore I had to search more specially focusing on the size. I had managed to come across these cut outs finally that would fit in well! I experimented on where I would place the images and how I should lay them out.

Again I wanted to add a personal touch with some kind of banner giving it a message of keeping cartoon alive although there is no way of watching it.

Also I had to add the Simpsons title just so that people that didn’t recognise their signature look would fully know what it is.

I realise that I should have drawn it myself or maybe filled the whole page instead of just the centre, but I thought it would look more neat to keep it within the boundaries.

How to fall back to sleep

With this page I do feel a bit lazy on it but as I didn’t have too much time on my hands I thought it would be a good idea to go along with it. I thought to get the content from an old magazine which would contain some kind of pop art to stick to our kind of style. Here is the page I wanted to use.

However I ran across an issue, thus being the page size, so I had to choose the right content to fit into my page. Obviously I had to include the main illustration and title so I had to trim it down a little to fit it in to A5.

I then wanted to personalise it a little by adding a few Z’s to create more of a feel that what the page is all about. With them I decided to vary through a couple of fonts to mix it up a little. I experimented with this idea in pencil then finally went over in fine liner to perfect the Z’s that I found worked well.

I was given the role to create the title for the front page. I went with my font I created to give a static feel as if to reperesent an electronic screen cutting out, thus giving the message that we have no technology anymore.

Like I did when I was thinking of ideas for the font, I sketched it out first lightly in pencil then added the points in the letters going in horizontal directions, trying to keep the whole thing within the 5mm border.

I then went over it the Type with a fine liner giving the outline a thick feel. After I done this I had to get rid of all the pencil marks and template.

Moving on to the distrubuter logo. I thought to make the typography nice and neat and give it a professional look as I wanted to make this a company that also distribute other Zines. I went for the flicky text to give the feel of the old days. I thought I’d place this in the middle of the front cover at the bottom so people could still recognise the logo quickly with ease.

I see that the alignment isn’t spot on but I feel that this makes it look even more homemade and brings a friendly approach to the Zine.

Music will never die!

Today I thought I’d start on an idea I had for one of my page designs. I wanted to make a page which gave out the meaning that music will never go even though there is no technology with a pop art style to it. I got a well known face to the music industry and illustrated what he looked like in to a pop art character. Here are the steps I took to finish him.

First of all I done a quick sketch up on how it’ll fit on the page in pencil.

I then started to go over it in pen giving it a nice thick layer to give a nice finish. I also coloured in his shadows in pen.

In the next step I then moved on to colouring him in with very simple colours like they do with pop art.

To bring the message across in this illustration I chose to push out the message like this as I got the influence through pop art like this!

I then cut out the message and tried placing it in different areas of the illustration to experiment in where it would look best.

I decided to go on my first option then cut out the points that run off the page.

Group Comunication

To proceed through this assignment keeping each other connecting so we knew exactly what we were doing throughout the time we weren’t together, we had to create an message group on an application. There were many ways we could do this going from emailing eachother, through Skype calls, through whatsapp and through Facebook. We went through these options and went for a Facebook group chat seeing as that was the most convenient option for everyone.

The Reason why we did this was that half the time we had to complete this assignment was during reading week… College was unfortunately the only time we’d see eachother in person. I believe if we didn’t have that week as a reading week we could have possibly achieved much more and maybe everyone in the group would agree with the other work within the Zine. Though being said I believe we did extremely well on staying in contact with eachother throughout the process.

Group Brainstorm session 2

Today we met up again to discuss our individual brainstorms at home. My pages layout failed to be agreed by everyone but we wanted to create something we all agreed on. Here are some notes we took down in to what we where thinking on.

We thought to make the theme of the Zine a bit pop arty, with a lot of illustration in it and not so much information in it. On the image above we had finally got a rough idea on who’s doing what. We got inspired by pages from a pop art book that Sam bought in, these pages inspired me personally a lot as I love pop art!

Also Laura managed to find a typewriter! This was great as that we finally were assured we won’t have to hand write everything if we didnt want to!

With the front cover we thought of a layout similar to this sketch I had quickly done.

We all stuck to the font I used for the “WTF?!” So what I’m going to do is go home, sketch the type up and send it to them to add to it.

I also thought of a quick sketch of a computer covered in police tape saying keep out, murder scene- in a laughable manner to the whole scenario.

I thought it would be good to package the issues in sanwhich bags to give it that home made feel. I got inspired to do this by the picture bellow. Also I would like to wax seal the packaging to give it a personal touch.

We finally wrapped it up at all agreeing to doing as many pages we can to give us more options on what pages to include. Also keeping it full coloured and using different types of colouring techniques as long as it gives a pop art feel.

Communication Theory

In today’s lesson we talked about communication and thinking of the many ways how we communicate in both visual and audio perspectives. Below are the notes I had took down during our lecture.

Due to the readability of this picture I will be describing the information numbered in the image 1-4.

  1. Here is a mind map on our visual and audio communications such as songs, emails, radio, TV, letters, websites etc. Also we talked about how we communicate information and the three types of disruption that is Noise. Psychologic noise is mental interference that prevents you from listening. If your mind is wandering when someone is speaking to you, the noise in your head is preventing communication. So if someone is talking to their friend who’s trying to analyse my Zine, that would interfere them into taking much notice in the Zine. Physiological noise is any physiological issue that interferes with communication. For example, if you have a headache, it may be difficult to notice many things going on around you. Semantic noise occurs when there is no shared meaning in a communication. It’s about if the audience can understand the specific object clearly.
  2. Finding the difference between Redundancy and Entropy I found rather difficult. Entropy needs redundant elements in order to make things more clear and give away clues to the audience about what the information is trying to give out. Entropy is the probability of a piece of information understanding things better by the way information is presented.
  3. Here I took my poster and wrote on what I could take out of the poster to still give the audience the information needed to be taken in. I could take out the main image and yet the poster would still be understandable. although the image lets the audience know what there is to capture on the walk, therefore making the image within the poster a redundant element.
  4. Thinking of disruptions to my audience to see my poster in the public from my latest project i wrote that whoever could be looking for my poster may stumble across some interference. Traffic may be blocking the view of it, it could get wet and damage, making the colours run. Maybe the printed version may be too dark for people to notice from a far distance.

With this task it has given me a better understanding to a target audience, knowing what could interrupt them from seeing and understanding the poster and also finding out other ways to communicate with your audience. Finally i also found it helpful identifying the difference between Entropy and Redundancy.

Individual Brainstorm

So when I found some time to do some brainstorming of my own I was mainly do using on how it was going to look and what the style of the title would be! I also thought up of some logos for our distributer. Here are some sketches I thought up.

I liked the idea of making a wax seal on top of our packaging to give a signature feel to the final piece. I think with the wax seal I’ll put just a paw print on it then with the front cover distribution logo I’d like to use is this one.

The reason being is because it’s nice and simple and easy to recognise what animal it is, it’s also neither too big or too small.

With the main title of the Zine I wanted it to fit the brief pretty well, giving it an apocalyptic or olden style feel. Here are a few sketches I done on the day.

I loved the idea of the top one giving it a look like a TV or screen cutting out, enhancing this idea from the brief seeing as a solar flare had occurred and had got rid of all technology. What I then done was I thought of a few ideas and picked out what I liked in each one of them and putting it all into the one at the bottom. The simplicity of the third one down grabbed my attention as it stood out with its bold font so I mixed it up with the top one. I dimmed down the static feel a little to make it more readable and I thing it worked out pretty well!

Along with the content I thought it would be a good idea to each do:

  1. One advertisement
  2. One favourite song lyrics
  3. One how to guide
  4. One funny news article
  5. One quote of the week
  6. One short comic strip

Here are some quick sketch examples on how I thought the pages should be set out as.

This step took a few hours and it’s good to get as many ideas in. The thing is I think of loads of ideas but the ones that leave my mind are the ones I think that will work well in a specific scenario. I can’t go any further with this until I see my group again on the next day of college.
